Referral

Getting into a counseling or psychotherapy relationship is a commitment, so it is important to investigate your options before getting started. Consider the cost, time and energy required for the therapy to work. Many people schedule an initial consultation appointment to get a "feel" for the fit, to ask questions about treatment options and discuss the logistics of setting up a regular appointment time.

Insurance

People pay for therapy in one of two ways - out of pocket and through insurance. At CenterGround we accept three forms of insurance: Blue Cross / Blue Shield PPO plans, United Behavioral Health, and MassHealth PCC plan. Other insurances are sometimes accepted because the member has an "out-of network" benefit or they carry an indemnity policy. In general, HMO plans are not accepted for insurance reimbursement. Also this list of insurance providers may change over time, so be sure to check when you call.

Be aware, however, that the use of insurance for counseling and psychotherapy has some drawbacks. First is that confidentiality can be compromised. By agreeing to use your insurance, the company retains the right to review your treatment records. And though this information is "legally protected" by them, there is some chance that your confidentiality will be compromised. Second, it is often difficult to know exactly how much treatment your insurance company is willing to pay for. Companies require periodic treatment plans to be submitted before ongoing authorizations are issued. This can be a concern because the length of treatment can be unknown and directed by the insurance company, not by you or the therapist. It can be an uncomfortable milieu in which to conduct long term therapy.

Out-of-pocket

Due to confidentiality concerns, lack of insurance coverage or for simplicity reasons many clients pay for their therapy out of pocket. The standard fee for a therapy session is $120. For those for whom this creates a financial hardship there may be room for negotiating a lower fee. This depends upon several factors including the availability of sliding scale "spots", appointment scheduling, and household income.

When you are ready to come in for a consultation, give a call to arrange for an appointment time. Like all sessions, the standard fee applies for this consult. During this time you can ask questions as well as simply starting the process of introducing yourself and your concerns that bring you to therapy.

Occasionally a one-time consultation is all that a particular person or family wants or needs. These kinds of appointments are equally welcomed.
